Body Mass Index (BMI) Formula Inaccurate, Revolutionary Leptin Blood Test Useful for Diagnosis and Reversal of Obesity
The scope of the obesity epidemic in the United States has been grossly underestimated, according to a study by Eric R. Braverman, M.D. and Nirav Shah, M.D., M.P.H. published in the journal PLoS ONE today. Researchers found that the Body Mass Index (BMI) formula substantially under-diagnosed obesity when compared to the Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan, a direct simultaneous measure of body fat, muscle mass and bone density. The researchers also derived a leptin-revised BMI estimate of body fat for clinical use in the absence of DXA. [...] Read the rest of this post »

Your dominant biochemical controls your temperament, or what I call your nature. Your nature encompasses all of the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of your health. If a patient comes to me with a physical problem such as chronic headaches, I can predict that she also has other issues, whether or not she is aware of them. Perhaps this patient has had subtle, low-grade depression, chronic anxiety, or an overall sense of malaise. Another patient might come to see me for asthma treatment, but when I probe further, it turns out he also has a memory deficit. These disorders are linked because they are nature-related illnesses. Dr. Braverman recommends the following herbs and spices for flavor and health:
CAYENNE (CHILE PEPPER)
Properties: When fresh or lightly cooked, these peppers are high in vitamin C. When added to the diet in sufficient quantities, cayenne was found to reduce appetites. Believe it or not, when capsules of cayenne are taken before meals, it can reduce heartburn.
Cooking: Adds color and heat, rather than flavor, to curries, soups, and stews. Put it on fish to give it a slight reddish color, but do not blacken. [...] Read the rest of this post »

Progress is being made on discovering the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s disease. We are becoming more adept at making accurate predictions as to who is more at risk for developing this form of dementia.
Recent research suggests that women are more at risk for developing Alzheimer’s. The good news is that with increasing evidence on why women are more prone, we can more easily formulate measures to help prevent Alzheimer’s from consuming their golden years. [...] Read the rest of this post »

The superiority of an ultrasound physical exam to a routine physical exam done with one’s hands is considerable. Today’s physical is simply inadequate and inferior. Just as we have evolved from using a rolled up piece of paper applied to a woman’s chest to a classic tube stethoscope device, we must make the transition from this outdated examination to an ultrasound exam. On Monday, November 7th, Dr. Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson’s death. Jackson’s final words were “more milk”, according to Murray, pleading for him to give Jackson more of propofol, the milky white substance that rocked the singer to his death. On an interview with Good Day New York, Dr. Braverman shared his professional perspective of the ethical issues surrounding the Michael Jackson case: “Every doctor has a responsibility to treat each patient as if he were a member of his own family…that means being firm when making the right decisions.” He told Good Day NY that there are so many other options to treat insomnia, that for a doctor to resort to propofol, is downright ‘absurd.’ [...] Read the rest of this post »
