Why Table Manners Matter More Than You Think!

One of the most disturbing trends in America is the dying of the family meal. The family meal is not just about feeding our physical hunger; it’s a place to satisfy our emotional hunger and for the teaching and passing on of values. The dinner table is a place to feed and nourish the body, mind and soul. How you eat and what you choose to eat, teach your children values that go beyond the dinner table. Children are like sponges: Much of what they take in has to do with moral values and character. Good parents consciously plan and devote time to parenting. They make developing their children’s character their top priority: The family meal is about civilizing the children and teaching them how to be a member of their culture.

The Ritual of the Family Meal
Family meals and its rituals are a rich source of meaning on behavioral, cognitive, and emotional levels. Family mealtime should communicate ideals that children will draw on throughout their lives. It’s in the teenage years that this daily investment pays some of its biggest dividends. Studies show that the more often families eat together, the less likely kids are to develop addictions, eating and mood disorders, and the more likely they are to do well in school, delay having sex, eat their five a day, and know which fork to use. On a side note, although food and structure is important, I always recommend 3 key supplements for all children, as these are part of healthy brain functioning and have shown to improve cognitive functioning (all below supplements are available here):

Ultra-Omega 3

Phosphatidyl choline powder

B-50 complex

Mindful Eating
If family meal patterns are associated with disordered eating behaviors, this will transcend into other areas as well. There is a reason why America struggles with obesity: The joy de vivre that is supposed to be associated with eating has become a thing of the past. On one hand we have families obsessed with dieting and restrictive eating; encouraging children to develop messed up body images, eating disorders and scars for life. On the other hand, we have families living off Domino’s and Fruit Loops munched down in front of the The Biggest Loser on TV. What both extremes lack, however, is a mindfulness approach to eating. When we disconnect from our bodies, override our basic hunger/fullness signals, we are setting ourselves up for disaster: Messing up our biochemistry as well as starving our emotional hunger.

What Your Put on the Dinner Table Today, Will Affect Your Children’s Behavior Tomorrow!
In many European countries eating is a meditative experience, where they actually take several hours off work in the middle of the day to savor a meal. They take time to eat, taste, smell… really savoring the flavors! Something that is almost considered a sin here in the States: Lunch is often scuffed down in the midst of taking phone calls. Most people will opt for an often quite “undelicious”, nutritious disaster of a high-calorie energy bar, instead of sitting down to a proper meal that nurtures their body and mind, and takes the edge off the midday stress, and inevitably enables them to work better. That, and you don’t end your day on a starving sugar crash reaching for the nearest bag of Doritos. Paradoxically: In our desperation to save time, we end up wasting it.

Understanding how the food you feed your children activates their genes and sets them up for addictions and mood disorders in their teenage years will help you realize the importance of planning the family meal. If you don’t take the time to plan now, then you will have to pay the price later. Prevention is always easier and - ironically - saves you time in the end. The choice is yours. Show me your plate, and I will tell you what the future has in store for you!

Morning stiffness, painful joints, restricted range of motion, bone spurs, and in some cases deformity of the joints - these are the symptoms of osteoarthritis. There are over 100 different types of arthritis; most commonly affecting the joints of the hands, hips, knees, and spine. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition where the cartilage that protects the joints wears down. This degeneration is partly due to free radical damage to the cartilage.

80% of Americans suffer from this disease!

It is estimated that over 40 million Americans have some degree of osteoarthritis and the likelihood of osteoarthritis increases as we age, affecting 80% of those over 50!

Are you at risk?
If you can say yes to any of the below statements, then you need to start a preventative treatment approach ASAP!

I am overweight

I have suffered from injuries early in life that led to inflammation and breakdown of the cartilage

I have biomechanical imbalances (such as foot arch problems)

I have poor digestion

I have high concentrations of toxic substances

I have hormonal imbalances

I have nutritional deficiencies (not getting enough vitamins, minerals or essential fatty acids)

I take NSAIDs or steroids

Take the Age Print Quiz developed by Eric Braverman MD, to determine your weakest body part and whether you are part of the 80% who will suffer from this debilitating and painful disease.

You may not have any of the physical symptoms now, but remember that every disease ultimately starts in your brain, so once you suffer the physical symptoms, you have already depleted those key communicators in your brain that controls your body and determines its state of health! At PATH we are able to take action and prevent disease progression, as we analyze your brain chemistry. We all have vulnerabilities and errors; knowing your weaknesses is crucial in order to prohibit genetic disposition from becoming genetic determination!

Contact us to learn more!

Natural alternatives to osteoarthritis drugs
Eric Braverman MD has successfully treated osteoarthritis via specific nutritional supplements - again, early detection is key! At Path we have developed following naturopathic treatment protocol for osteoarthritis:

A&P Support
This supplement is specifically developed to block the COX-2 enzyme that makes prostaglandins that result in pain and inflammation. This supplement is a combination of various herbs used for centuries in Eastern medicine - at PATH we specialize in combining the best from Eastern medicine with traditional Western medicine.

Ultra Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids as found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines help to keep the inflammatory pathways in the body in balance. It also works to keep joints lubricated, which makes it especially helpful for osteoarthritis. When buying fish, make sure that it is free from mercury and toxins. Dr. Braverman gets his fish from www.VitalChoice.com. This is one of the few places that offer fish tested free from heavy metals. Use offer code 7777777 to get a 10% discount on your purchase.

Mega Resveratrol
Resveratrol inhibits the expression of proinflammatory mediators such as COX-217 and has a cartilage-protecting effect. More and more studies are confirming resveratrol to be one of the most efficient antioxidants available. As DNA damage is the culprit of osteoarthritis, taking antioxidants that protect your cells from oxidative stress is of great importance.

Glucosamine & Chondroitin
Several well designed studies have proven that glucosamine sulfate is just as effective as standard drug therapy for relieving the symptoms of osteoarthritis - and in some cases the supplement is even more effective than conventional medicine! Many of these studies compared glucosamine sulfate with standard NSAIDs (the pharmaceuticals that are often prescribed to reduce pain by reducing inflammation). Glucosamine was shown to produce better long-term results than these conventional medicines.

In addition to supplementing with the abovementioned, Dr. Braverman’s range of medicinal seasonings and flavanoid rich teas is an important part of a nutritional therapeutic program to combat inflammation. Dr. Braverman’s teas, spices and supplements are available online at www.totalhealthnutrients.com or call 1-888-THN-7284 to speak to a nutritionist.

This will change the way you FEEL, THINK and LOOK. No, this is NOT another fad diet. No, this is NOT another piece of gimmicky work-out equipment.

This is cutting-edge science translated into doable guidelines and a plan FOR LIFE that will turn on your fat-burning hormones and reveal your amazing abs. Once and for all!

No crunches required!
You do NOT get a six-pack by doing a million crunches. You get a six-pack by having a bodyfat% that allows your abs to show.

So, how do you get a low bodyfat percentage?
The key lies in eating right for your brain chemistry type. Your brain controls your body. If the key neurotransmitter - dopamine - that governs metabolism is not working at its optimal, you are NOT going to burn fat, no matter how much you starve yourself. Why?

Because a calorie is NOT just a calorie.

Nutrition is information that speaks to our genes and activates messages of health or disease. In America the majority of us suffer from what I call “The Starvation Syndrome”: We are overweight yet undernourished. How can this be?

Leptin resistance! Leptin is a key hormone in your body that signals satiety as well as promotes the breakdown of fat!

INTEGRA-LEAN is the supplement that Eric Braverman MD recommends to turn on this key metabolic hormone. Integra-Lean is based on the extract from Irvingia (a West African plant). Irvingia inhibits an enzyme called glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase in facilitating the conversion of glucose into triglycerides that increase adipocyte size; thus reducing the amount of glucose (sugar) that is converted to fat in the body. You can get this supplement online at www.totalhealthnutrients.com (1-888-THN-7284).

“When patterns are broken new worlds emerge.” - Tuli Kupferberg
And one might add: New bodies emerge! Weight-loss is about so much more than calories in vs. calories out. I know that this works, because this is what I do myself - I eat right for my brain chemistry type, and THAT enables me to have A STRONG MIND in a STRONG BODY!

Actions speak louder than words - are you taking weight loss advice from your overweight doctor, then you might want to think twice. Obviously, there is a missing link, if someone does not walk the talk. Change your brain and change your body by following the steps in Eric Braverman’s, MD bestseller YOUNGER, THINNER YOU!

Now I love red wine and I love cottage cheese – anywhere but on my thighs. Come bikini season and a lot of us turn to the latest fad diet to shift some pounds quickly. Fasting and purification can be an uplifting experience that enhances health and attitude, depending on why and how it is done.

Almost all modern affluent people need to fast from a lifelong daily schedule of three meals supplemented with between-meal snacks along with after work drinks. Virtually every religion and healing tradition recommends fasting for therapeutic or spiritual advantages. Many of our primitive ancestors fasted as the seasons changed: in the spring when winter supplies ran low, they typically fasted on little more than water and spring greens. However, excessive fasting on juices can seriously impair the metabolic rate and digestive strength, cool and weaken the body, and sometimes result in abnormal weight gain after the fast (typically what happens to serial yo-yo dieters, as they suffer from what I call “the starvation syndrome”: grossly overweight, yet being severely undernourished). To avoid these adverse reactions the type of fast should be matched to the individual.

A common assumption is that quicker cleansing methods, such as fruit and vegetables juices - similar to the principle of the much hyped “Master Cleanse “program that celebrities Beyonce Knowles, Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway. have used to shift the pounds quickly and release stored toxins, are the most efficient. Although, the quicker methods can be valuable therapeutically, it is important to keep in mind that slower and milder fasts with selected foods foster a consciousness of patience and a faith in the wisdom of living with gentler cycles, so to speak. Such fasts can bring amazing healing to those who lead stressful lives or suffer from emotional overeating issues.

Because of the foods most of us have been eating during the greater part of our lives, certain foods groups work better in a fast than others, depending on the food residues that need to be eliminated. These residues are most often from the acid-forming, high-fat, mucus-forming categories: meats, fish, poultry, eggs, most dairy, most grains and legumes, refined sugars, drugs and chemicals. When the body is too acidic as a result of these foods, disease and infection proliferate. This is especially the case in arthritis and rheumatic conditions.

The body should be slightly alkaline in order to build an alkaline reserve for acid-forming conditions such as stress, lack of exercise and poor dietary habits. The most alkalizing foods are fruits, vegetables, sprouts, cereal grasses (thus the hype of wheat grass shots) and herbs. The acid-alkaline balance can also be changed dramatically by simple practices such as soaking whole grains and legumes before cooking in order to start the sprouting process which is alkalizing. Another highly alkaline-forming process is to simply chew thoroughly in order to mix whatever is eaten with saliva, which is a very alkaline fluid.

The fasting high that you experience during longer fasts are due to an increased release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers) - similar to the endorphin high experienced by long distance running. Endorphins alleviate pain by binding to mu opioid receptors located on neurons within the brain and spinal cord. Ultimately, this is part of the reason why starvation can become addicting and partly explains the biology behind Anorexia Nervosa. There are several other biological and environmental causes for anorexia, and a lot of it has to do with brain chemicals being out of whack – especially serotonin seems to be a main issue with regard to whether one develops Anorexia. You can learn more about how to balance your brain chemicals in Dr. Braverman’s bestseller book The Edge Effect!

Before going on a fast Dr. Braverman recommends smoothing the transition by starting out taking a supplement that scrubs your intestinal tract clean and helps curb your hunger: Slim fiber. This is NOT just a regular fiber product. This is a scientifically proven mix of flax, Psyllium husk, prune and apple pectin as well as gut friendly lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria. Apple pectin is especially efficient in helping to rid your body of stored heavy metals that may be preventing you from burning fat optimally and cause long-term damage to your nervous system along with messing havoc on your brain chemistry. You can get Dr. Braverman’s Slim Fiber at http://www.totalhealthnutrients.com

The pesticides commonly used for conventionally grown fruit and vegetables may be linked to attention deficient hyperactivity disorder. A new study published in the May 2010 issue of Pediatrics has found that trace amounts of the pesticides known as organophosphates, can still be found on fruits and vegetables, and have a toxic affect on children’s cognition. According to the lead author of the nationwide study, these chemicals are designed to affect the nervous system of insects. Not only could it kill the insect, it interferes with its ability to carry on normal functions. The same may be true when humans ingest even the smallest amounts.

If you are feeding your family with conventionally grown fruits and vegetables in an attempt to boost their immune system, you may be doing more damage than good: eating an apple a day may no longer keep the doctor away. A far better choice would be to buy organically grown produce, and local if possible. Organic produce is FDA regulated to be grown without the use of harmful pesticides or genetic modifications. It is widely considered to be a safer, healthier alternative. What’s more, these fruits and veggies are thought to have higher antioxidant levels.

The Environmental Working Group has developed a list of the most pesticide laden fruits and vegetables. These are the ones that should always be bought as organic, and if they are not available, skip them entirely.

The Dirty Dozen:

Apples
Cherries
Grapes
Peaches
Pears
Spinach
Bell peppers
Celery
Potatoes
Nectarines
Raspberries
Strawberries

Next, get your family’s pesticide levels checked in order to determine whether immediate detoxification is needed before permanent harm is done to the nervous system. As I always say, prevention combined with early intervention is the best approach.

My PATH Medical office now offers pesticide testing. We are currently the only office in the New York area that offers this vital service. Knowledge is power, but only when action is taken: your family’s health is in your hands. Call our office to get tested today.

The word “dementia” has a certain finality to it that is jarring to even think about. It reminds us of nursing homes or hospital wards, and old age. However, dementia doesn’t happen over night: losing brain function that affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior takes years of gradual change.

There are at least five stages of cognitive decline that occur prior to full blown dementia, with numerous variations. Typically dementia begins as follows with the corresponding loss of specific brain chemicals:

Brain processing speed: loss of dopamine

Memory: loss of acetylcholine

Attention: dopamine, acetylcholine, and serotonin imbalance

personality and temperament change: GABA imbalance

IQ changes: loss of dopamine

Dementia: loss of all brain chemicals

Dementia can also be associated with a variety of medical conditions. Chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, inflammation, elevated cholesterol, and high blood pressure, can all cause damage to our ability to think and remember. Smoking and other illicit drug use have also been linked to aiding the progression of dementia. These illnesses and conditioned are also linked to changes in brain chemistry. What’s more, they are also brought on by a decline in hormone production. Specific hormonal deficiencies that are linked to dementia are:

DHEA

Estrogen

Growth hormone

Testosterone

50% of all Americans are fully demented by age 80. You don’t have to be one of them. Take my Brain Quiz and see which brain chemicals you may be deficient in, and then read my book, THE EDGE EFFECT, on how to bring these chemicals back into balance through lifestyle changes that are as easy as diet, exercise, and nutrient supplementation. At the same time, you can learn how to safely augment your current hormone levels through bioidentical hormone therapies so that you’re memory and cognition can remain strong and stable for years to come. Make an appointment today and see if these life-changing therapies are right for you.

Adult ADD reduces our ability to clearly focus, hurts our productivity, and can be devastating to relationships.

What’s more, the latest research is showing a link between ADD and nutrition. Many people who suffer from ADD may in fact be following poor diets filled with low nutrient foods, including foods that will increase blood glucose levels. Not only will this affect the way you think, it puts you right on the road towards Type II Diabetes. By adjusting your diet now, you may be able to gain better attention and fix your overall health so that you can enjoy every aspect of your life.

Although glucose and insulin are not brain chemicals, they are essential for normal brain function. Glucose is the principal fuel of brain cells, and insulin regulates glucose levels. You need to be able to manage the right levels of glucose and insulin in order to think clearly. People function at their best when their blood sugar is within a fairly narrow range of glucose levels. In general, a healthy range is between 75 and 85 mg/dl, and less than 140 mg/dl after eating.

A sedentary lifestyle paired with excess weight caused by the overconsumption of carbohydrate-rich foods creates insulin resistance. Insulin is produced in the brain, particularly in the hippocampus, the region associated with memory, learning, and other cognitive functions. When we do not produce enough insulin, glucose builds in the blood stream, resulting in hyperglycemia or high blood sugar, leading to Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes and poor attention.

The good news is that insulin resistance and Type II diabetes are both preventable and very often reversible. And once you can get your glucose and insulin levels back to normal ranges, you may be able to maintain better attention. It all starts by following the Younger Thinner You Diet. You’ll learn how to:

· replace bad fats with healthy fats

· plan meals that are high in protein (fish, chicken, beans etc.) so that you don’t fill up with bad fats or simple carbs

· increase your fiber in the form of vegetables and whole grains, which will help moderate glucose and insulin

I also recommend the following supplements to rebuild brain chemical deficiencies associated with ADD behavior:

B-50 Complex

Borage Oil

Brain Energy

Brain Mood

Calcium Citrate

Ginkgo Biloba

L-Tryptophan

Ultra Omega-3

Zinc Complex

Before you start any diet, make sure to discuss your health with your physician. Call the Path Medical office and take the first step to better thinking today.

We are all addicted to something: hobbies, work, sports, music, even sex. When we are passionately addicted there is no end to what we can achieve. The energy that surrounds someone who is dedicated is contagious and can change people’s lives - including your own.

However, we can get addicted to destructive activities, including recreational drugs, alcohol, and certainly food. Stealing, shopping, gambling, cutting, and other behaviors affect specific brain chemicals in the same way that positive addictions work. Whenever we do something repetitiously, pathways are formed in our brain that signal cravings, and can be rewarded by that sense of gratification.

Food addiction works the same way: when my patients tell me that they are addicted to coffee, chips, or chocolate, I know they are telling the truth. The first time you reach for that coffee, sugary food, or drug you will feel amazing. Your feel-good brain chemicals (mainly dopamine and serotonin) increase dramatically. This feeling will imprint a memory in your brain, encoded in your biology long after the high wears off.

The next time you need something energizing, your brain remembers how it felt and will send powerful impulses out to get it. You cannot control your biology, so you will end up doing just about anything to get whatever makes you tick. You may find yourself in 7-11 at midnight with your hands full of ice cream containers or emptying your kids’ candy stash. Whatever your vice, you find yourself doing these things in a fog and first coming back to reality after the hit… promising yourself that you will never do it again. Tomorrow is a new day, a fresh start… you will come clean. This is what you tell yourself time and time again, as days turn into months that turn into years.

The worst part is that a food addiction is hard to beat. The “cold turkey” approach won’t work. The fact is, we need to eat to survive. The key to breaking a food addiction is to rebalance your brain.

Nobody gets slim by sheer willpower, staying slim takes brainpower! At PATH we recognize the complex nature of food addictions and work with nutritionists who are trained in minimizing cravings through nutrient therapy, coaching strategies, and state of the art BEAM testing to determine which brain chemicals are responsible for your food addiction. That way we are able to determine which combination of medications will take the edge off your cravings. Then we can work together to retrain your brain with the right nutritional approach for your specific issue.

You can change your brain today and cut the chains of addiction! Give us a call and let us help so that you can look and feel younger than ever.

The core belief of my medical practice is that every illness has a complex brain component that is affected by the delicate balance of brain chemicals and hormones. Obesity and its related diseases are no different, because weight gain and weight loss are governed by the brain. Anyone who has polished off a pint of ice cream in one sitting knows that certain foods can over-ride our body’s physical fullness signals. Even when we do not stimulate the sensory pathways in the mouth, we still can experience a reward signal-or craving-that comes from the brain.

That is why my Younger, Thinner You Diet is based on restoring your brain to optimum functioning.

By increasing dopamine, you’ll ramp up your metabolism effortlessly; by increasing acetylcholine, you forego fat cravings; by increasing GABA, you can get off the obsessive/anxiety related eating patterns and develop portion control; by increasing serotonin, you can give yourself and your brain a rest so you will no longer crave carbs and salty foods. The key to dieting success is then to feed yourself what your brain truly craves in order to create the optimum levels of these brain chemicals: nutrients.

When you follow a restricted diet that chooses one nutrient group over another, success might be apparent at first, but doesn’t last. When you restrict certain macronutrients, like carbs or fat, your brain isn’t getting all the nutrients it needs, so the body sends out a hunger signal that results in overeating. The key to weight management is not found in counting carbohydrates, fat grams, or calories, but in balancing brain chemistry through nutrition-something anyone can do easily and effectively. It is an eating plan you can follow for life.

One way to increase your nutrient content is through the foods you choose to eat. I advocate a diet that is high in nutrient-dense foods, like fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, teas, and spices. However, modern farming techniques have significantly depleted our food sources of their nutrients. Organic choices are certainly better, but they are not always available, and frankly, it may take years for an organic apple to be significantly more nutrient rich than a conventionally grown one. So even when we are eating lots of fruits and vegetables, we are only getting a fraction of the nutrients these foods should contain. That’s why supplementation is becoming more important than ever.

In my book, Younger, Thinner You Diet, I offer a test to see which brain chemicals you may be deficient in, and then you can choose which supplements to take. This test is also available by clicking here.

Hormones are chemicals produced by glands. There are more than 100 types of hormones in a healthy body. The brain regulates, translates, and interprets its electricity code as hormonal output from the various internal organs. When hormone output is high, both men and women feel healthy, sexy, and young.

As we age, our organs get to a point where they no longer produce their corresponding hormone on their own. The brain tries desperately to resurrect the dying parts of our body by sending more and more electrical signals to our hypothalamus which begins to release hormones to the pituitary gland that simulates the ovaries, testicles, adrenal glands, thyroid, and liver in an attempt to save it. But no such luck. Instead, cortisol increases, and we end up feeling lots of anxiety, and collecting belly fat. Worse, without natural hormone supplementation, these same internal organs will die and drag your entire health down with it.

For many women, perimenopause as well as menopause can look and feel like a march into “shrinkhood”: women lose height, get weaker, lose mental functioning as well as their sexual drive, and notice drying and wrinkled skin as well as decreased sensitivity to touch. Male menopause is commonly referred to as andropause, and is marked by a decline in sexual function.
I reverse the symptoms of menopause and andropause every single day with my patients. When treated correctly, my patients look and feel better as they lose weight, increase muscle mass, increase libido, increase arousal, increase orgasm, and get rid of their depression.

Why Go Bioidentical?

All hormone therapies are not created equal. I only prescribe bioidentical hormones, which are plant-based, natural and safe. These compounds have the exact same molecular structure as those made in the human body. Because of this, they produce the same physiologic responses as the body’s natural hormones.

Bio-identical hormones have been available for over 20 years. They are so lacking in side effects that they are frequently sold over the counter as nutrient supplements (melatonin, pregnenolone, vitamin D3 and DHEA to name a few). There is a wide range of bioidentical hormones that you can consider replacing, depending on your current health status.
On the other hand, synthetic estrogens are still being made from horse urine and have been known for years to cause an increase in blood clots, heart attacks, stroke, and breast cancer. It has been scientifically determined that women taking hormones derived from horses (methyltestosterone) have an increased rate of cancer. Other complications associated with synthetic estrogen and progesterone include weight gain, heart disease, and stroke. It has also been shown that growth hormone from cadavers causes cancer.

Men: Reverse Andropause and Get Your Sex Life Back on Track

An estimated 5 million American men have a medical condition called hypogonadism, or low testosterone. The rest of us simply lose testosterone as we age. Andropause, the male equivalent of menopause, is marked by this decline in testosterone. Andropause affects every aspect of sex, from desire to performance. It also can affect our mood, memory and thinking, and most of all, our health.

Andropause typically begins at age 40, but can occur earlier in life if you are under enormous stress, have episodes of depression, excessive athleticism or drug use. The good news is that once these scenarios are reversed, your testosterone levels will naturally increase. And if you are losing testosterone because of natural aging, then you can replace this hormone and others naturally with bioidentical options.

Here are some of the symptoms you can expect to reverse with the right bioidentical hormone therapy:

anxiety

decline in general well-being

decreased beard growth

decreased hair and nail growth

depressed mood

excessive sweating

fatigue

irritability

joint pain and muscle achiness

loss of libido

loss of skin elasticity

loss of vitality

nervousness

sleep disturbances or problems

sexual performance
